Remembrance Day Preparation
To set the tone for the November ceremony, CIJA, in collaboration with BJEC, provided a one-hour presentation for high school students in our Jewish day schools. The presentation will profile Jewish men and women who served during WWII and is based on a new book by acclaimed CBC journalist and Montreal native Ellin Bessner, titled Double Threat – Canadian Jews, The Military and WWII. Ms. Bessner, a graduate of Talmud Torah and Herzliah St. Laurent, is coming to Montreal and will be presenting at Azrieli Herzliah, École Maimonide, Bialik and Hebrew Academy during the week of October 23, 2017.
Ellin Bessner is a professor of journalism at Centennial College in Toronto, and the author of a new book about Canada’s Jewish servicemen and women who fought in the Second World War. The book is called “Double Threat” and is being published by New Jewish Press, from the University of Toronto. It is available for Remembrance Day, November 11, 2017 at most booksellers including Chapters, Amazon and Target.
Ellin was born in Montreal and graduated with a degree in journalism and political science from Carleton University. She’s interviewed Prince Phillip and the Dalai Lama. For her new book, she spent six years researching, traveling, and interviewing over 300 veterans and their families, to tell the untold stories of how and why Canada’s Jewish community sent 17,000 men and women in uniform to defeat Hitler in the Second World War. It is a story that has never been comprehensively told before.
