Music, Movement and Executive Functioning: 20 Activities to improve cognition and self-regulation

In today’s workshop we will apply current neuroscience research to enhance children’s skill sets in five distinct domains, thinking, self-regulation, learning, behavior and social-emotional skills. Using a skills-based approach we shall review how fostering collaborative classroom cultures creates opportunities for children to learn, thrive and grow. We shall practice patterned music, movement and executive skills coaching activities to help children become empowered learners with better attention, memory and self-control.
Research shows that children with better organization, planning, attention, inhibition and social-interactive skills learn academic content and build lifelong adaptive skills with greater ease. Direct executive function skill coaching with an emphasis on building thinking skills can help students function now and in the future with greater success.

Further, recent auditory neuroscience research indicates that children who are able to motorically respond to a steady beat with good rhythm and timing appear to have more ease in learning phonics, math and self-regulation. We observe in our clinical work that children who move well with good temporal-timing are better able to think things out and inhibit their behavior, making them more socially successful. We shall integrate cognitive, motor movement and narrative language activities you can begin using today.


Lynne Kenney, Psy.D., is a pediatric psychologist, mother of two, an international educator, and author in Scottsdale, AZ. Dr. Kenney’s books include the Social-Emotional Literacy program Bloom Your Room™; Musical Thinking; and Bloom: 50 things to say, think and do with anxious, angry and over-the-top-kids (Kenney & Young, 2015).

With a keen interest in changing the trajectory of children’s learning through cognitivemovement, Dr. Kenney is known for producing classroom activities which integrate neuroscience and physical education to improve executive function and self-regulation. In 2017, she co-authored the 5n45 cognitive-exercise program with Bruce Wexler, MD creator of ACTIVATE at Yale C8 Sciences and developed The Kinetic Classroom, cognitive-physical activities for schools.

Dr. Kenney has advanced fellowship training in forensic psychology and developmental pediatric psychology from Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School and Harbor-UCLA/UCLA Medical School. She holds a Master’s Degree in Physical Education from the University of Southern California and a Doctorate from Pepperdine. Lynne is dedicated to improving children’s cognition and learning in under-served communities. Learn more at
