Make sure that with your final selection you have either one full-day workshop or a morning and an afternoon workshop by looking at the time given in the workshop description. (All teachers) Non-fiction: The other way to read

Do children really know how to read non-fiction? We expect that they do, but when asked to summarize, they don’t seem to understand what we want or their summaries are longer than the original text! The goal of this workshop is to acquaint teachers with how to teach students to read non-fiction, how to take notes, how to ask questions that refer students back to the text, as well as how to recognize conventions, point of view and bias to help them be more critical readers in this “alternate reality” age. Activities include learning the differences between skimming, scanning and close reading, as well as their uses. We will also be constructing questions to scaffold students learning as well as creating graphic organizers and strategies to make learning visible to your students.

Requirements: Bring a laptop (not a tablet)


Pierre has a Bachelor’s in Education, a B.A. in Sociology, an MA in Child Studies, and a PhD in Education. He has been teaching since 1983, all the way from preschool to university, including having taught in high school for 22 years and lectured for the Education Department at McGill for 10 years. He worked at the Ministry of Education for 7 years, creating the scales for Secondary Cycle 1 & 2, as well as creating ELA Secondary leaving exams. Since 1999, he has been teaching the International Baccalaureate (IB) Language and Literature and Design, and has been a Workshop Leader and a site visitor for the IB.
