(High School) Implementing the Maker mindset

October 22, 2018 @ 9:30 am - 11:45 am

Sylwia Bielec & Chris Colley, Pedagogical Consultants, LEARN

Workshop Code: #LL6
Room: 350

Are you curious about Makerspaces, Art Hives, Genius Hours and Passion Projects? These open-ended, interest-driven learning spaces provide learners of all ages and abilities with the unique opportunity to engage with various technologies as agents and creators. From exploring circuitry by connecting a board to a computer to creating wearable technologies and robots that draw, the Maker movement has expanded the way we see our place in the technological world. This workshop will examine how Makerspaces and the Maker mindset can engage learners of varying abilities not just when it comes to technology, but when it comes to learning itself.

The LEARN team has a decades-long combined experience and expertise in promoting active and engaged learning for young people and adults alike. We believe in creating and facilitating learning environments that allow all people to learn in the ways which suit them best. Our consultants have been working with educators on pedagogical innovation projects right in their classrooms, the most recent being Open Creative Spaces (also known as Makerspaces and STEAM classrooms), in a spirit of joyful experimentation and collaboration. The LEARN team holds free monthly Open Creative Space sessions at its offices, as well as specialized sessions on specific topics (such as block programming, robotics, microprocessors, etc.).
