(All teachers) The making of an activist

October 22, 2018 @ 12:45 pm - 3:30 pm

Gail Klinck, Teacher and Union officer, Appalachian Teachers’ Association
Julie Montpetit, Executive Assistant, Quebec Provincial Association of Teachers

Workshop Code: #LL14
Room: 270

Like it or not, or believe it or not, young people are inheriting a world in peril. Educators are placed in a unique position to help students see the importance of responsibility and action, whether it’s at a personal, local or global level. This workshop will focus on how to incorporate social action issues and themes into the classroom, school and personal life. This will help kids see the power they have to make a difference.

You will receive a resource package of themed lesson plans, links to organizations, possible sources of funding, and ideas to take your actions to the street!

Gail, a teacher for the past 25 years, believes that education is about more than the three R’s; it’s about helping young people mature into good citizens to become active in their communities, as well as the world around them.

Since 1997, Julie has been a part of the Quebec Provincial Association of Teachers (QPAT) team, working on behalf of teachers. Some of her dossiers include parental rights, new teacher induction, as well as human rights and social justice issues.  Prior to that, Julie taught both elementary and high school students.

“My students taught me to look for joy. It has now become common practice. Once I find it, I give my all to bring it to whatever I am doing.”
